Support the Cuban PeopleBlog February 18, 2019
Its never been easier for US citizens to travel to Cuba – legally!
Not only are there daily flights from all the major airlines and cities direct to Havana, but there is a new ‘category’ of permitted travel to Cuba known as ‘Support the Cuban People’.
This category of travel replaces the category formerly know as ‘People to People’ which was scrapped by the Trump administration. Happily a new category was created called ‘Support the Cuban People’ which gives more scope than ever for US citizens to join everyone else from around the world who comes to Cuba to participate in our programs!
What is ‘Support the Cuban People’?
When you check in for your flight you will be handed an Affidavit and requested to tick a box that applies to you, such as the example below;
This is a declaration by you stating your reason for travelling to Cuba. ‘Support the Cuban People’ is sanctioned as a permitted reason for travelling to Cuba under regulations governing the legislation collectively known as ‘the embargo’ and regulated by the Office of Foreign Assets Control (part of the US Dept. of the Treasury).
Under this category you undertake to participate in a full time schedule of activities involving meaningful interactions with Cuban people and staying in privately owned Cuban residences.
All our programs meet these requirements. The properties you will be staying in are Casa Particulares – privately owned and managed albeit regulated by the government – AND all our staff are self employed Cubans working in the private sector. Moreover in addition to interacting with our house staff on a daily basis you will be taking Spanish lessons with us delivered by self employed Cuban teachers and enjoy other educational activities including dance lessons, ‘discover Cuba’ walking tours and other cultural activities and volunteering.
These activities all comply with the current regulations, constitute a full time schedule of activities and are deemed to provide support for the Cuban people.
